Privacy Policy

Overview

Sober Sensei is a sobriety support app. We designed it so most of your sensitive data stays on your device. This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and your choices.

Data We Collect

Stored locally on your device (no account required)

• Name (optional, if you provide it during onboarding)
• Selected triggers and goals
• Sobriety start date and weekly spend estimate (if provided)
• Craving SOS check-in history
• Voice message recorded for “Message to Future You” (stored as a local audio file)
• App preferences and onboarding completion state

Sent to our servers when you use AI Chat

When you send a message in Chat, the app transmits:

• Your message text
• Your name (if provided)
• Your selected triggers and goals

This data is sent to our chat backend to generate a personalized response. We do not require you to create an account.

Subscription data

Purchases and subscription status are handled by Apple through StoreKit. We receive entitlement information to unlock Pro features. We do not receive or store your payment card details.

Data we do not collect

• No email or password
• No advertising identifiers from third-party ad networks (ads are not active in the current app)
• No precise location tracking

How We Use Data

• Personalize AI coaching responses in Chat
• Power in-app features (SOS, progress tracking, voice playback)
• Manage Pro subscription access
• Improve app reliability and fix bugs

We do not sell your personal information.

Third-Party Services

• Apple App Store / StoreKit — subscription billing and restore purchases
• Sober Sensei backend (sobersensei-backend.onrender.com) — AI chat message processing

Each provider processes data according to its own policies. Apple’s terms apply to App Store purchases.

Data Retention

Local data remains on your device until you delete the app or use Reset & start over in Profile, which clears local app data on that device.

Chat messages sent to our backend may be retained temporarily for processing and service operation. We aim to minimize retention and do not use chat content for advertising.

Your Rights & Choices

• Access / delete local data: Use Reset & start over in Profile, or delete the app
• Optional name: You may skip providing your name
• Subscriptions: Manage or cancel in iOS Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions

Children

Sober Sensei is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Security

We use HTTPS for network requests. Local data is stored in standard iOS app storage on your device. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure.

Changes

We may update this policy. The effective date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the app after changes means you accept the updated policy.

Terms and Conditions

Agreement

By downloading or using Sober Sensei, you agree to these Terms and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the app.

Service Description

Sober Sensei provides educational and motivational tools for people working on alcohol sobriety, including:

• Craving SOS breathing and check-in tools
• AI chat coaching (“Sober Sensei” / Master Haku)
• Progress and milestone tracking
• Optional voice message recording
• Optional Pro subscription features

Sober Sensei is not medical care. It does not diagnose, treat, or cure alcohol use disorder or any other condition. It is not a substitute for licensed healthcare, therapy, or emergency services.

If you are in crisis or may harm yourself or others, call emergency services (e.g. 911 in the U.S.) or a crisis hotline immediately.

Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age required in your country) and able to form a binding contract. You are responsible for compliance with local laws.

Your Responsibilities

You agree to:

• Use the app for personal, lawful purposes
• Provide accurate information where you choose to enter it
• Not misuse, reverse engineer, or attempt to disrupt the service
• Seek professional help when needed rather than relying on the app alone

You are responsible for decisions you make about alcohol use and your health.

Subscriptions & Payments

Pro features may require a paid subscription billed through Apple’s App Store.

• Payment is charged to your Apple ID account
• Subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period
• Manage or cancel in Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions
• Restore purchases using the in-app restore option where available
• Refunds are handled by Apple under Apple’s policies

Product IDs may include darkheartllc.sobersensei.monthly, darkheartllc.sobersensei.yearly, and related Pro plans as shown in the app.

Free features may change over time. We may modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of the service.

AI Chat Disclaimer

Chat responses are generated by AI and may be incomplete, inaccurate, or inappropriate for your situation. Do not treat chat output as medical, legal, or professional advice. Use your own judgment and consult qualified professionals when needed.

Intellectual Property

The app, branding, design, and content (except your user-generated inputs) are owned by DarkHeart LLC or its licensors. You receive a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the app for personal use.

Disclaimer of Warranties

THE APP IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

We do not guarantee uninterrupted service, error-free operation, or specific sobriety outcomes.

Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, DARKHEART LLC AND ITS AFFILIATES WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF DATA, PROFITS, OR GOODWILL, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE APP.

OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM RELATED TO THE APP WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) AMOUNTS YOU PAID US FOR THE APP IN THE TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM, OR (B) USD $50.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations; in those cases, limits apply to the fullest extent permitted.

Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless DarkHeart LLC from claims arising from your misuse of the app or violation of these Terms.

Termination

You may stop using the app at any time. We may suspend or terminate access if you violate these Terms or if we discontinue the service.

Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the United States and the state in which DarkHeart LLC is organized, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, except where mandatory consumer protection laws in your country apply.

Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms. Material changes will be reflected by updating the effective date. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.
